Who should use NJ TRANSFER?

Q:

Who should use NJ TRANSFER?

A:

NJ TRANSFER is designed to facilitate the process of transferring courses from a community college to a four-year college or university in New Jersey. NJ TRANSFER will prove particularly useful to someone who is: 1) planning on enrolling in community college courses; 2) already enrolled in community college courses; or 3) advising or counseling potential or current community college students.

If you’re planning on attending a four-year college or university in New Jersey, you can use NJ TRANSFER to determine if and how the courses you take at your local community college will be applicable to your degree program.

Currently, NJ TRANSFER only provides course and academic program information about colleges and universities in New Jersey.

I attend a four-year university in New Jersey.  Can I use NJ TRANSFER?

A:

No, at this time NJ TRANSFER facilitates the transfer of courses from a community college to a four-year college or university in New Jersey. However, you can use NJ TRANSFER if you have the option of enrolling in courses at a community college and transferring them back to your four-year institution.

A:

Yes. The components of NJ TRANSFER will allow you to enter course information from more than one community college.

A:

We suggest you meet with the transfer counselor at the community college to discuss your options. You may still wish to take the course to satisfy a personal interest or, it may be necessary to complete a program or degree requirement at the community college.

A:

Yes, you can use the Recommended Transfer Program component to identify the general education requirements you need at a four-year college or university. We also encourage you to work closely with the transfer counselor at your community college.

Q:

By completing the Recommended Transfer Program (RTP) in NJ TRANSFER, will I also satisfy all the course requirements for the AA or AS Degree at my community college?

A:

Not always. Although many of the course requirements for the AA or AS Degree correspond to those in the freshman and sophomore years at the four-year college or university, there can be significant differences between the two programs.

Q:

If I complete all the community college course and general education requirements outlined in the Recommended Transfer Program, will I have satisfied all the freshman and sophomore requirements for the four-year institution I plan to attend?

A:

Not necessarily. Some four-year colleges and universities have other requirements, such as demonstrating proficiency in a foreign language. It may not be possible to reflect these requirements in the Recommended Transfer Program. We strongly encourage you to read the text information found at the bottom of the grid on the Recommended Transfer Program page. Also, if available, click on links that provide comprehensive information about the institution's academic policies and requirements. Lastly, we suggest you seek the advice of your transfer counselor.

I took a course at my community college I think should transfer to the four-year institution I plan to attend. However, based on the information in NJ TRANSFER, it doesn’t. Who should I contact?

A:

We recommend you first meet with the transfer counselor at your community college. Then, if you still have questions, contact the department at the four-year institution that corresponds with the department offering the course at your community college.

Q:

What if the Recommended Transfer Program for my major program of study includes a course not offered by my community college?

A:

We suggest you meet with the transfer counselor at your community college to discuss your options. Your counselor may advise you to take other courses that will transfer into your major program of study. You may also consider enrolling at the four-year institution you plan to attend during a summer session to complete the courses not offered at your community college.

How can I determine which two- or four-year institutions offer my program of study?

A:

To learn which institutions have the program of study you are interested in, use the Search For Major component (available in fall 2006) in NJ TRANSFER.

Q:

What does it mean if a course is 'Pending'?

A:

'Pending' means the course has not been evaluated by the four-year institution. It is likely this is a new course at the community college that was recently submitted for review. We recommend you e-mail the person at the four-year institution listed on the Transfer Contacts page.

Q: How can I receive answers to detailed transfer, admission, or financial aid questions? 
A: If after searching the college's/university's Web site, you would like to receive additional information about their transfer policies and procedures, or admission and financial aid requirements, go to the Transfer Contacts page for the name and e-mail address of the institution's transfer contact person.

What if I can’t find any information in NJ TRANSFER about the four-year New Jersey college or university I plan to attend?

A:

Currently, Princeton University and Stevens Institute of Technology do not participate NJ TRANSFER. For further information about these institutions, please click here to link to their Web sites.
